ProEx - Our Story

ProEx - Our Story of Growth, Professionalism and Excellence
The evolution of ProEx Physical Therapy is a unique story of friends and colleagues partnering together to grow a  healthcare practice for all the right reasons. The shared vision amongst the partners, all of whom are physical therapy professionals, is simple and effective: to operate a company that is clinically driven and focused on people–its patients, employees, referring clinicians, clients and vendors. Their goals are to achieve clinical and service excellence. They believe that their mission will ultimately have a positive impact on the physical therapy profession as a whole and benefit the most important people in the profession – the patients.

How it began
ProEx physical therapy original office serving massachusetts and boston Michael J. Mulrenan, PT founded Mulrenan Physical Therapy in 2001 and, within a year, succeeded in expanding the business to a full-service wellness facility called Baystate Wellness Center. Baystate offered fitness memberships, personal training, sport training, pre/post natal fitness, massage, and nutrition services combined with a childhood obesity program called Early Start Nutrition & Fitness. The center proved to be instrumental in helping to build the physical therapy practice and was well respected for its dedication to the health and wellness of the various populations of the community. In 2002, Matt McManus, PT, a long time friend and colleague of Mike was brought in as a partner. In 2005, Mike and Matt decided to close Baystate Wellness Center to focus their time and energy on the Mulrenan Physical Therapy business.

The Catalyst
physical therapy offices serving new hampshire for back painIn 2004, Joe Dattilo, PT, an alumnus of Woburn High School and football teammate of Mike Mulrenan, joined Matt and Mike to form the Stratham Physical Therapy practice. Over a ten year period Joe had built a strong reputation as one of the New Hampshire Seacoast’s premier physical therapists. It was then that Joe sought out Mulrenan Physical Therapy to assist him with the administrative aspect of the business. Stratham Physical Therapy of Stratham, NH, proved to be successful, and in 2005 they were joined by another partner, Steve Swasey, PTA. They opened a second location in 2007 in Epping, NH. Then in 2008, the clinic’s recognized professionalism and commitment to delivering quality physical therapy secured them a long term relationship with the area’s premier sports club, Seacoast United. It was then that they opened their third clinic in Hampton, NH, within the sport club’s own indoor soccer facility.

New Locations – Continued Growth
Eric Kopp, PT, had many years of professional experience as a clinician and educator in the Connecticut and Western Massachusetts region. His professional drive to excellence and education led him to the Mulrenan Physical Therapy team, with whom he had a long friendship through years of clinical training together. In November of 2007 he was invited to join the team as a partner and to lead the Connecticut and Western Massachusetts region with a new clinic under a new name, ProEx.

One Company, One Name

In 2007 the physical therapy companies hired Chief Executive Officer, David MacDonald, to assist with the administrative and operational needs of the company along with setting the strategy to position the business to grow. Another major development in 2007 was the centralization of all administrative functions into a single Kittery, ME office. Chief Operations Officer, Mike Severo was also a key hire later that year.

The growth of the company originally focused on the regional needs of the communities it serviced and, in doing so, the companies selected names with regional recognition. But as the company grew, the opportunity to tell patients about our additional clinics in nearby states became a difficult task to communicate—there were various practice names, yet one message.

It was then that the partners decided to consolidate the assorted names to a single company name and began branding all the clinics as ProEx Physical Therapy. In the early transition of the name change, it was important to communicate to existing patients, that they had not been acquired by a large medical corporation, that in fact they were still the same local clinics and the same ownership, with the same friendly staff and licensed physical therapists with the same commitment to their patient’s care—and the only change was in their name. It was in March of 2008 that the three existing practices officially came together as one company with one name - ProEx Physical Therapy. Since the name change in March of 2008 ProEx Physical Therapy has opened two new clinics, located in Springfield, MA and Boston, MA.

The Future of ProEx

new physical therapist offices serving new hampshire and maine In 2009 a key partnership formed when ProEx teamed up with Betsy Donovan, PT, the founder of Mountain Center Physical Therapy (MCPT). The partnership strengthened the ProEx brand by adding a like minded organization with a quality staff. It also allowed MCPT to grow to three sites in a short period while still staying focused on meeting the physical therapy needs of the community. The three sites now include Conway, NH, Glen, NH and Fryeburg, ME. The original clinic in Conway, which was established in 1995, remains as MCPT’s flagship site. Because of its reputation for quality service for close to 15 years, MCPT has become a household name throughout the Mt. Washington Valley region as the number one choice in physical therapy.

The foundation of success of ProEx has always been the people. It is through its relationships and trust in its partners and employees that ProEx Physical Therapy is here today. ProEx currently employs approximately 100 people in 11 clinics throughout New England. ProEx is privileged to be able to affect the lives of so many patients and hopes to continue that for a long time.
